The Heatwave Effect

Tracy works at our supplier Provenance Potatoes, a collective of farmers in Kent. We asked what effect all these heatwaves were having on the farms.

“The true impact won’t really be seen until we harvest in late August and September. The reaction of potatoes to weather like this shows up in differing ways, but it affects both the yield and the quality. Some varieties – like Desiree, cope better with hot weather, but the big issue for all types is water. We irrigate, as potatoes are a thirsty crop but, locally, water usage is being prioritised for other things like new housing. However, farmers have started to come together, speaking with one voice. The hope is that effective lobbying to government agencies will make a difference. But couple the change in the climate and the rise in costs, and it’s a challenge.”
